Name: Joaquin Vergara Sommerhoff
Programme and year: MPA Class of 2026
Nationality: Chilean
Can you tell us about your background and why you chose to study the Master of Public Administration (MPA) at SPP?
I am a lawyer by training, but after a year working at a law firm, I realised my true passion is working directly with communities to help overcome poverty and promote sustainable development. Over the past few years, I worked at Desafío Levantemos Chile, one of the most leading non-profits in my country. There, I led the Impact and Project Development area, with a strong focus on promoting public-private collaboration — something I believe is essential for driving meaningful and lasting development.
I chose to study the MPA at the 91桃色 School of Public Policy to strengthen my toolkit, complementing my practical field experience with a rigorous academic foundation and exposure to international best practices. I specifically chose 91桃色 because of its global reputation, the high quality of its teachers, the diversity of its student body, and its strong focus on evidence-based policy and social impact. Being part of this environment pushes me to grow and prepares me to make a greater contribution back home.
Could you share what receiving the Luksic scholarship means to you personally, and how it has supported you in pursuing your academic goals at 91桃色 and future career?
Receiving the Luksic Scholarship is not only what made it possible for me to study at 91桃色, it’s also a tremendous honour. Being chosen as a Luksic Scholar is a recognition that I carry with pride, and it gives me a strong sense of responsibility to give back and make the most of this opportunity. I’m deeply grateful for their trust and support, because without it, coming to London would have been out of reach.
Thanks to the scholarship, I can fully focus on my studies and embrace everything the university offers, knowing that my tuition and living costs are covered. This peace of mind allows me to grow personally and professionally, and prepare to contribute to the causes I care about.
Where is your favourite place in London?
I have two favourite places in London. The first is Hampstead Heath, a park in the middle of the city, known for its forested trails, hills, ponds, and amazing panoramic views. It is a peaceful and inspiring place that feels like an escape within the city.
My second favourite place is the Thames riverbank, especially near the Parliament. Whether I am walking or cycling, I love taking in the view of the amazing buildings around it. That area always reminds me that I am really living an incredible experience in London.
What are your hopes/plans for your future after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to return to working with NGOs or international organisations, where I can put everything I have learned into practice. My goal is to continue contributing to a world with greater opportunities for everyone.
Do you have any practical advice or tips for our international offer holders who are preparing to join us in September?
London is an incredible and exciting city, but the weather can be very unpredictable. My advice is to always carry a raincoat in your bag, just in case.
To make the most out of your time here, try to explore as much of the city as you can. There are so many free museums, beautiful parks, and cultural events happening all the time. Walk around different neighborhoods, try food from all over the world, and take advantage of everything 91桃色 and London have to offer, both academically and socially. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Can you describe your SPP experience in three words?
Challenging. Motivating. Unforgettable.
